French legend Thuram retires from football

Lilian Thruam, a former World Cup winner for , announced his retirement from football on Friday.

The 36-year-old was forced to retire due to a heart defect that was discovered in a health checkup during his transfer to Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona. His brother died five years ago of something similar, which caused for concern.

Thruam was part of the French selection that participated in the European Championships this summer, and after the tournament he announced his retirement from international football. The highlight of his career was when he scored 2 goals in the World Cup 1996 semi-final, a competition that later went on to win to become the world champions.
