Hoping to take another giant leap towards a play-off ticket, Melbourne will travel to the Sky Stadium on Saturday morning when they meet Wellington.
Starting with the hosts, while Wellington might have shocked many last season as they secured a silver medal finish, the Phoenix have endured a public A-League struggle this time around. Firmly battling it out at the foot of the table, Giancarlo Italiano’s men have seen their play-off dreams take a critical blow. Despite clinching a much-welcomed 2-1 victory away at Newcastle last week, that is the only win that Wellington have ed from their previous nine A-League appearances – a run that stems back to another 2-1 win against Macarthur on January 20th. With their recent issues underlined by a 6-1 drumming against Auckland back in February, the Phoenix have also gained an unwanted reputation for their glaring issues on home soil. Last seen at the Sky Stadium playing out an action-packed 2-2 stalemate against Western Sydney, Italiano’s camp have failed to win any of their six A-League showdowns on home soil so far this calendar year.
As for the visitors, while Melbourne might have fallen to a frantic 4-2 loss against Western Sydney last month, Arthur Diles’ camp came roaring back in some style. g off March with a rollercoaster 5-3 victory against Adelaide, the Blues are sat firmly in the driving seat to punch another play-off ticket this season. Suffering just a single defeat from their previous six A-League appearances, Saturday’s guests will also be excited by their clinical performances in the final third. In fact, Melbourne have ed 10 goals in their last three appearances. However, despite looking to take a giant leap towards a top-six finish here, the former Newcastle coach will have a continued headache over his side’s extended issues away from AAMI Park. Including a 3-2 loss against Adelaide on January 18th, Diles’ men have mustered just a sole win from their last seven showdowns on the road – a run that stems back to a 3-1 victory against Western United on December 1st.
