Chiesa refuses to rule out Juventus return but focused on Liverpool improvement

Federico Chiesa has refused to rule out a return to Juventus, though his primary ambition is to get back to his best with Liverpool next season.

Chiesa ed Liverpool for a reported £10million (€12m) plus add-ons last August, having been told by then-Juventus coach Thiago Motta that he was not part of his first-team plans.

The forward was part of the Liverpool squad that won the Premier League for just the second time, though he did not make his first start in the competition until the final day.

He only made six league appearances totalling 104 minutes all campaign, leading to suggestions he could return to Italy ahead of 2025-26.

In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Euro 2020 winner revealed talks over his future will take place in the coming weeks, but said he was not concerned about his lack of minutes last season.

“It will be an issue to be addressed in the summer. Me, my agent and my family have a very good relationship with Liverpool,” Chiesa said.

“The goal is to be ready for pre-season, then we will look for the best solution for everyone. I did a season in the Premier League without playing much, but that’s okay.

“A lot depended on the preparation and the fact that I had to settle in. I have all the credentials to return to my past levels.”

Asked if he regretted leaving Juventus after Motta failed to see out a single season at the helm, Chiesa said: “No, why should I?

“I was never offered a contract renewal. There had been s to talk about it after the Euros, but then nobody heard from them.

“When I returned after the holidays, I immediately spoke to Thiago Motta, who told me loud and clear, ‘You are not part of the project, look for a team’.

“Motta didn’t want me any more. I am a professional, I accepted and continued to train to look for another team.

“It was a great regret because I care a lot about Juventus and I thought I could still give them a lot.

“I was at Juventus for four years and I always behaved well, but it was their choice. Returning one day? Never say never.”

Chiesa ed 21 goals and 17 assists in 98 Serie A appearances for Juventus, having scored 26 and assisted 17 for Fiorentina before ing the Turin giants – initially on loan – in 2020.

With Italy looking to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after missing out on the last two editions of the global showpiece, Chiesa knows he needs a strong season in 2025-26.

“I hope it’s my season. My dream is to participate in the World Cup. I played and won a European Championship, but the World Cup would be the top,” he added.
