Ian Maatsen to Borussia Dortmund on loan from Chelsea

Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen is on his way to Borussia Dortmund, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Italian journalist has reported on X that Maatsen has completed a medical at Dortmund and will the German club on a loan deal in the January transfer window.

Romano has added that Chelsea will extend the current contract of Maatsen until 2027. It will have a release clause. The well-known and well-respected reporter has noted that former Bundesliga champion Dortmund will have priority to sign Maatsen on a permanent deal in the summer of 2024.

Maatsen has been struggling for playing time at Chelsea under new head coach Mauricio Pochettino this season. The left-back has made one start and 11 substitute appearances in the Premier League and has made two starts and one substitute appearance in the Carabao Cup for the Blues this campaign.
