Ki targets goals in new season

Swansea City midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng is desperate to end his goalscoring drought for the club.

Ki, 24, ed the Welsh outfit last term for £5.5 million from Scottish Premiership champions Celtic, for whom he scored seven goals in his final season.

But the South Korean, who played 38 times for Swansea in the 2012-13 campaign, failed to score a goal, as he played a deep-lying midfield role.

He managed to find the net in Swansea’s 2-0 pre-season win at Dutch side FC Gravenzande earlier this month and wants to repeat the feat in a competitive match.

“There are a lot of games this season and everyone is going to be hard for us,” Ki told the South Wales Evening Post.

“Hopefully I can score my first goal, it would be great if I scored. I need to score this season — that is my target — and if I can I want to score more.

“At Celtic I scored some goals. I haven’t set myself a total, just when I have a chance I want to do my best. But it’s not easy to score when I have to play so deep.”

Swansea will face either Malmo or Hibernian in the third round of UEFA Europa League qualifying, in which they will have a chance to qualify for the play-offs.

And Ki revealed that his team are raring to go, no matter who they play.

“We just want to play so it doesn’t matter who it is. We just want to show what we’re about,” he added.

“We’ve had some good practice in pre-season so hopefully things will go well. We don’t care who we play. It won’t be an easy game whoever we get. Every game is hard.

“Whether we play Hibernian or Malmo, we’ll just try our best. I know because I was in Scotland that Hibernian may be a bit noisier.”
