UEFA Champions League 16 Sep 2008

Michael Carrick is to miss the start of title-holders Manchester United’s Champions League campaign after being ruled out on Tuesday for four to six weeks with a broken bone in his foot.

That means the England midfielder will miss Wednesday’s European opener against Villarreal at Old Trafford and the Premier League champions’ league match against domestic rivals Chelsea this Sunday.

Carrick, 27, is also set to be on the sidelines from the Champions League group games against Aalborg and Celtic after sustaining his injury during last weekend’s league defeat away to Liverpool.
